XP restore

Is it possible..... Someone did a system restore from the windows restore
point, which was one day old and it wiped out all information in my documents?
Can that really happen? I am thinking that it could have been the system
restore from the manufacturer. But the only thing is it took 10 minutes and
all it say was examining the files or comparing the files.
I am completely baffled.
