Recently, my DELL computer failed in running Windows. When I turn on my computer, the screen says that the windows file is either corrupt or removed, I have checked and it is still installed. I followed the directions and inserted the original disc and then pressed R at the first screen as instructed to go to the recovery console. It then takes me to the C://WINDOWS> prompt. I am not very knowledgable as far as computers go and I am unsure of where to go from here, I know there are different commands that I can use, but I don't know which one or what to do with it. I have also been reading about the problem and I notice that many people suggest going to the initial installation instead of the recovery console and then repairing from there. I am basically clueless as to how I can repair my computer and still keep as many files as possible. Any instruction or input would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi

You have select the wrong option to repair XP. Have a look at the following article:

Hi

If you have no option to Repair, you shouldn't carry on with the install. If you read Michael's comments after clicking on 'Warning#2!' a Repair install may not be possible - although could be by using the 6 CDs for XP Home or Pro:

"Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks"
Windows XP Home Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290

Windows XP Professional
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

The files in the %systemroot%\repair folder are replaced by the install - you don't have to access then manually.

| I tried to do what the webpage says to do, but I guess my problem falls under Warning 2, there is no option to repair. I read the directions and the %systemroot%\repair part is a little confusing to me. Do I perform that in the C prompt for Windows? I know there is a system root command. Thanks for the advice though, that is a helpful webpage.
