Trying to repair XP; the repair option keeps asking for an
administrator password and refuses to go past that (but
the administrator account has no password). What to do?

Per MS tech support if you did not setup a password this
option will not work unless you have a admin password.
Isn't that great???

At the password screen. Try pressing ENTER.

You can also start in SAFE MODE and log on that way

Are you trying to enter recovery console or do a repair to your xp install?
hit enter if you do, or if you are trying to do a repair do not hit r but
hit enter to install then f8 to agree then hit r for repair.
