How do i remove windows xp from a desktop if i do not
have the original cd that loaded it on to my computer? i
have xp professional, and want to change to xp home
edition.

if you have Windows XP Pro now you will have to go buy a copy of Windows XP
Home to buy on that computer. the two are not interchangeable. once you
buy Windows XP Home you can boot from the CD and you will have to wipe your
hard drive clean and install Windows XP Home.

Are you aware that the only differences between XP Home and Professional is that there are extra features in Professional? There's nothing in Home that's not also in Professional, and there's no advantage to having Home instead.

The only good reason for wanting to replace professional with Home might be that you wanted to put the Professional version on a different computer. But since you say you don't have the Professional CD, that can't be your reason.

I don't believe my eyes! You finally are making sense when comparing the two versions of XP.

Ken, methinks this could possibly be a case of replacing "free" XP
Pro with paid-for XP Home. If so, that's the honest and honorable
thing to do. :-)

Yes, I didn't read his message that way, but you may well be correct. Still, if he wants to replace a pirated copy with a legal one, he probably should still consider a legal copy of XP Home instead of getting professional. *Most* (but not all) home users don't need Professional and its extra features might well be wasted.

With more specific information, we might be able to save you a lot of time.
Why don't you have the CD, and if it was from a friend, pirated download,
etc. it doesn't matter. If you purchase the right XP version, and you set a
value for your time; you may have the option to only change the CD key and
keep your current configuration intact.
