I recently reinstalled XP, and now I get the report "no
sound device installed" when trying to play cds, use
media player etc. System Information says the same, "no
sound card", "null" etc. I am not techy, but I do not
see a separate soundcard inside the case and the speaker
jack appears to plug in to a socket off the motherboard -
I assume there's an inbuilt audio capacity there - so I
can't remove and reinstall a soundcard. All was well
before the XP reinstall, any thoughts and suggestions
would be greatly welcomed ... Thanks, Shel.

Sounds like the driver for your sound card is not installed correctly.

Get the driver for the sound card from the HW manufacturer - install it in
control panel, system, hardware, device manager.

You need to install the drivers for the sound "card". They will be
included on the CD that came with your motherboard, or go to the
computer mftr.'s website and download them. Post back if you need more
help. If all else fails, buy a cheap (around $20usd) pci soundcard and
stick it in the machine.

I too have this problem and my drivers are up to date
and device manager lists everything working fine. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and many
different drivers for it and it still wont work. I also
removed the card and enabled my onboard sound and it will
show up working fine and it still does the same thing.
