I received this error message when re-installing XP.
During the setup, pop up box appeared:

"unregmp2.exe-Entry point not found
GETIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library
MSDART.DLL"

After clicking ok about 100 times, the box finally
disappeared. The set up finished installing and I
rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the Dell logo, then a
screen that lists my pc's configuration. At the bottom,
it says to press <DEL> to resume. I press delete and
then XP starts up. Does this have something to do with
the error message I recieved during setup? For whatever
reason, XP doesn't start automatically, so I'M not sure
what to think. Thanks for your help.

Hi Angie,

This is caused by performing the repair installation. Not all of the DLL's, or the program that's calling the DLL are replaced with the appropriate version.

The MSDART.DLL is Microsoft Data Access - OLE DB Runtime Routines

If your version of XP did not come with SP1, you need to visit Windows Update and reinstall SP1 and any critical updates. If your version of XP came with SP1, then you need to reinstall the Critical Updates released since then.

Your particular error message is probably related to this patch:

Hi Doug,

I went ahead and reinstalled the patch you suggested.
Then, I went to try and reinstall SP1...but doesn't let
me. I've looked to try and uninstall it, so I can
reinstall it, but can't find it anywhere. Any
suggestions? Do you think that will help clear my
problem with Windows not automatically starting up? What

The press <DEL> to continue issue sounds like its something to do with your computer hardware, not Windows. This could indicate a problem with the keyboard or other hardware that it thinks is a problem, so it stops to tell you.

What happens when you try to install SP1? Any error messages?

When I go to install SP1, the Microsoft site
automatically takes me to download SP1a. If I try to go
ahead and download that, it brings me to Windows Update,
which scans my computer and comes back saying there are
no updates to install. I've looked in Add/Remove
Programs to try and uninstall SP1 so I can reinstall it,
but it's not listed there. So, I don't know how I would
go about uninstalling it, just to reinstall, in hopes it
would correct my problem. Just a side note, XP starts
perfectly when I press DELETE, it just won't start
automatically. It's got me stumped!

Go to Control Panel, System. If you have SP1 installed, already, it will be indicated there. You can also click Start, Run and enter WINVER.

The <DEL> key issue, is not relavent to XP, particularly, if you're seeing before XP even begins to load. Is there anything else, that accompanies the Press <DEL> to continue message that would indicate what the problem is? There is usually a setting in the BIOS (you'll have to consult your computer's manual for more information) that tells it to "Halt on errors" with some exception settings like All but keyboard, All errors and etc.

Well, I do for sure have SP1 on here. I've gone into my
BIOS and noticed in the event log the following: "Pre-
Boot error: Keyboard not functional". From there, I
uninstalled the keyboard driver and reinstalled it. Then
I went into the BIOS and checked everything...seemed ok.
Finally called Dell...they were useless. Had me change a
few settings in the BIOS, and nothing worked. Finally
she emailed me a download to update the BIOS. Tried
running that, doesn't work. So, I'm at a loss now. I
guess I'll just have to deal with it. Thanks for all
your help and suggestions though! :)

Angie,

Ok, since you have SP1 installed, there should still be a number of hotfixes that apply to post SP1 systems.

Can you do me a favor? Go to the Windows\System32 folder and locate the MSDART.DLL file. Right click it and select Properties. Do the same for Windows\System32\dllcache (this one's a hidden folder) and the copy of MSDART.DLL that should be located there.

Doug,

Alrighty, this is what I have. There seems to be two
different verions, so maybe that's the problem? I did a
search on all files (hidden included) and this is what it
came up with:

C:\Windows\System32 = version 2.71.9042.0
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 = version 2.71.9030.0
C:\5664e53314a523a = version 2.71.9030.0

Thanks, again, for all your help!

Angie

Angie,

2.71.9042.0 is the verson I have on my machine. What you can do, is rename the copy that's in the Windows\System32 folder, or copy it to another folder for backup, then replace it with the version 2.71.9030.0 file that's in the ServicePackFiles folder. See if this resolves your problem. The error you're getting is usually related to a call being made to a DLL that doesn't have the function that's being called. You should also check for the presence of a copy in the Windows\System32\dllcache folder. Dllcache is a hidden folder, but you can get to it by typing C:\Windows\System32\dllcache in Explorer's address bar.

Alternatively, install MDAC 2.8 (it will upgrade this DLL and a lot
of other files as well):

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataaccess.asp

You should also check for the presence of a copy in the Windows\System32\dllcache folder. Dllcache is a hidden folder, but you can get to it by typing C:\Windows\System32\dllcache in Explorer's address bar.

I do not have this file in the dllcache folder, only in the System32
folder (and in the ServicePackFiles\i386 folder).
