I have a disc with XP Home (activated) as the O/S and want
to change that to XP Pro, by installing Pro over the top
of Home and then reusing that original O/S on an old
computer presently running Win 98. Unfortunately the
existing disk cannot be installed in the old computer
which would have been by far the easiest solution.
Q1. Can Pro be installed on a disk currently running Home?
Q2. Can I activate Home for(technically) a second time?

If you use the "upgrade version" of Windows XP Pro to
upgrade over a Windows XP Home Edition installation,
you cannot then use the Windows XP Home Edition on
another computer since the XP Home license and XP Pro
license constitutes a single software program.

For Clarification:

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.
Then click on "End-User License Agreement" and read it.

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

Dave,
Yes you can install XP Pro over XP Home as an update, but
would recommend doing a clean install of XP Pro if at all
possible. I upgraded 2000 Pro to XP Pro and there are
definite quirks to its behavior now. I know you have at
least 3 "activations" with XP Pro before you have to call
Microsoft to activate. I would suspect Home is the same
way.

Thanks yr reply but haven't used Windows upgrades
since '98 turned my hair white. The extra cost of a full
versions causes much less pain. Dave.
