XP recovery console

I did a recovery once, but now I can't make it work. What
are the steps after you select "R"? I have a screwed up
boot.ini and can't boot up.

If you're looking for the Recovery Console it's F2 after booting direct from
the XP CD.

If you're after doing a Repair Intallation, you ignore the F2, go through
the F8 to accept the EULA and let Windows look for and find itself on the
hard drive. It will then offer the Repair Installation option... which is
where the "R" comes in.

That gets you a DOS style prompt - commands for it search on "Recovery
Console Commands" in Help and Support. The one you want is

BootCfg /Rebuild

to repair boot.ini
I would then use

Fixboot
Fixmbr

as well - probably not needed, so 'just in case', but quick and will do
no harm
