XP Re-installation Problems

I would like to reinstall XP version 2002. It has become slow and I've
installed a second larger hard drive. When I try to install from Windows the
message "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your
computer is newer than the version on the CD." apperas. When I reboot from
the CD I get the never ending Windows setup Blue Screen. My version of XP is
an upgrade and I can't find my WIndows 98 SE disk. (Not that I want to load
it first.) Any suggestions?

I hardly ever think reinstalling is the right thing to do, but it's your
choice.

When I try to install
from Windows the message "Setup cannot continue because the version
of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD."

You're trying to install a version without SP2 over a version with SP2.
That's a downgrade and you can't do that.

But it doesn't matter, because that's the wrong way to do it. See below.

apperas. When I reboot from the CD I get the never ending Windows
setup Blue Screen.

To do a clean reinstallation, just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the
BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for
a clean installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

My version of XP is an upgrade and I can't find
my WIndows 98 SE disk. (Not that I want to load it first.) Any
suggestions?

You don't need to load it first. The requirement to use an upgrade version
is to *own* a previous qualifying version's installation CD, not to have it
installed. When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed,
it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the
previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite
normally and quite legitimately.

If you don't have the Windows 98SE CD, or another qualifying CD, you're out
of luck and can't use your Upgrade version to reinstall cleanly.

Borrow from someone a CD for one of the qualifying versions.
