Yesterday
I was using a Utilities program to remove junk files and clean the registry when the keyboard, mouse and Task Manager froze. The utilitiy appeared to be working fine as it has in the past, but on closer inspection, appeared to be on an endless loop, scanning the same files. Earlier in the day, I did an XP install/repair because my kernel shell had been modified (???). I was also losing fonts on my menus, noticeably 'Open or Close' files appeared as 'O or CL', and occasionally right clicking on a file would action a 'copy' file command. I downloaded a virus extraction program and found a number of worms and viruses that had bypassed my up-to-date anti-virus program. These were in temp files and removed. One however was infected and non repairable - 'svchost.exe' which had to be deleted. System Restore was turned off as suggested. Now my system will not load. I tried using "Restore to the last best configuration' and get code error 7 I believe. Safe Mode tells me to use my XP CD-ROM and follow the 'Install' instructions until the option for 'repair' appears. My screen displays 'Set-up is analyzing your system', 'Loading files' and then hands on 'kernel Debugger loading'. An error message appears: ISA???.SYS file is missing - cannot install

Since I did not make a Recovery Console Disc, could I use my friends computer to make one? Is there an easy solution? My program applications are on my 20 gig drive. XP Op System resides on my 3.4 gig drive. Could I do a new install on the 20 gig drive without losing the data on the drive, or could reformat the 3.4 gig, reload windows and still have access to the 20 gig drive.

I am sitting at my friends computer in search of a solution. I hope that you can help me.

Thanks in advance for all that you do!

Guess what! Seems that viruses took me down really fast. I am using a good antivirus program, firewalled, and my windows updates are all current. Still, they got in. My security settings were set at medium. I hope this is helpful

I am going to ask my anti-virus supplier if they have any suggestions for restoring my system. Also, after reading the info at XP Expert Zone, etc,.. I understand that I can access my system using the Recovery Console on my XP set-up cd, of course once the viruses are all gone.

I had my antivirus set-up to email me an alert in the event of a virus on my system. Hindsight tells me that I should sent the alert to a friends PC because he could have called to warn me. Attached are the alerts..
