XP Professional vs NT

If a software application requires Windows NT V 4 or
Windows 2000, and does not mention XP Professional, should
I expect it to work on my XP Professional? Is XP a
version of NT? Thank you.

XP is a version of NT (v5 AFAIK) and your application would PROBABLY
work......best bet is to contact the vendor or manufacturer....
 
Yes you should expect it to work, especially commercial programs. But as bugs get fixed programs that have a bug that may work on earlier versions may not work on XP. If someone tells MS during beta testing they will write a special patch in to handle the bug.
Any program programmed to the API current at the time will work on XP (except drivers where there are rules on what will/won't). This includes Dos, Win 3.11, Win 9x and Win NT. Windows 2000 is NT 5.0 and XP is NT 5.1.
So if the programmer followed the rules and didn't think they knew better it will work.

Apps that do not work with XP that previously worked with NT4 and Windows
2000 include some antivirus programs, some packet writing software (like
earlier version of Direct CD), some imaging software like earlier versions
of Ghost won't work with XPs revision of NTFS. This site has reviews of

Windows NT 4 was version 4.0. Windows 2000 was based on NT & version was 5.0. Windows XP is also having it's base in NT while it's version is 5.1. So a app that runs on Win NT 4 or 2000 is supposed to run on XP. Also, you can still use the 'program compatiblity wizard' located in Accessories Folder of Programs Folder in Start Menu. This should help, just select the correct version -- NT 4.0 or 2000.
