Attempting to reinstall windows XP pro causes a fatal
error when it cannot find D:\i386\asms. I have tried this
from 2 different CD's with the same results. I do not want
to format the hard drive if possible. XP remembers where
it is in the installation, so I cannot get past the error.
I tried booting to safe mode, but it says the installation
cannot run in safe mode and give no choices to abort the
install. I tried botting to last known good configuration,
but that has the same reults. Any ideas how to get past
the error by aborting the install, or restarting a new
install w/o trashing the data on the HDD?

Most likely the Ram. WinXP is very touchy on cheap/bad
Ram. Other versions of Windows may still work but not
WinXP. VERY common problem. Try swapping your Ram.

Hope this helps!
