New computer my brother built for me. was working fine for several days.
bought a new monitor. still fine. hooked up to the web. fine. downloaded
norton. fine. downloaded aol. fine. checked microsoft update and was
prompted to download SP1. soon there after computer just kept restarting and
never could load all software before the next restart. also realized that
another antivirus program had already been added. so might be a conflict
there. twice I could see a very long message that windows was shutdown
because of an error to protect my computer. changed bios to reboot from CD.
with windows CD I see windows startup at the top of blue screen but nothing
else. no options to fix or reload. no data to lose so might be easier to
reload windows and start fresh. but can't figure out how. can restart in safe
mode but can't uninstall programs that way.

You should be able to go farther than that in xp cd boot.Try shutdown,
power disconected, remove battery, clear the CMOS,move the CMOS pin
from 1-2 to 2-3 for 1 minute,then return it to 1-2,replace battery,start
computer, you"ll need to reset basic settings in BIOS on start-up.

If you are going to completely reload Windows and start fresh then you
don't need to uninstall any programs. Boot off of a floppy, reformat the
HDD, then reboot from the CD.

Yes, there are much more complicated ways to install Windows but if you
want to learn about them you should buy a book.

I went into safe mode and did a system restore. everything seems to be
working. it seems the problem started with MS online update and downloading
SP1. should I avoid SP1 in the future. how do I tell update I don't want
it? seems odd anyway since my version of windows already had SP2 on it.

You probably did not install XP SP1 but .net framework SP1 or a service pack
1 for another application. If you have SP2 on your system, Windows Update
will not offer SP1 to you.

SP2 includes SP1 already.
