I am presently living in China and bought a new PC with XP Pro on it.
Unfortunately when I went to install the service packs from the internet I
have found that it is not registered. I do not have the disks for XP Pro and
cannot get them from the retailer. I have since purchased a laptop in Hong
Kong which DOES have disks - for XP Home. Can I change from XP Pro to XP Home
on my PC? Can anyone help? What do I need to do? Is it easy to do?
Thanks

Joy, if by "not registered" you mean that you have a pirated copy of
Windows XP Professional on your PC that we block from updates etc, then you
bought a laptop with Home Edition. You then currently have a laptop with a
valid license and a PC that is not licensed to use Windows XP at all.
You may not just install your laptops copy of Windows XP Home on your PC,
and you should purchase a full retail copy of Windows XP Professional for
your PC and perform a repair install.

Thanks, Mike. I didn't realise that it was a pirated copy and thought I had
bought from a reputable retailer. Will have to purchase a full retail copy
when I next go to Hong Kong.
Cheers

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

You cannot replace the pirated WinXP Pro with your WinXP Home,
because you have an OEM license that cannot be legitimately
transferred to any other computer.

Betcha that will be a pirated copy also! The Chinese sell more copies
of Microsoft software than Microsoft does..... a friend of mine is over
there now stocking up on stuff.

Clue: When a full retail copy of Windows XP, new, in the box with the
COA, etc. sells for $2.00 US currency you might want to be a bit
suspicious..... oh, and that Rolex for $7.98 might not be that good a
deal either. ;-)

Note: this doesn't mean there aren't honest dealers and reputable
retailers but there are more of the other kind.
