Is it normal for Windows XP Prof. to have 5 SVCHOST.EXE running?

What is the program CTFMON.EXE?

From time to time applications stop responding, so when I key in the
CTL-ALT-DEL
this makes the stop responding application to respond. Anyone knows what is
going
on here?

Thank You.

Yes - it provides the interface for a slew of different services, which
get loaded up in groups, each with its own svchost

What are some of the services that used SVCHOST? Is SVCHOST
a program that is used for Internet access?

You can get an idea by going to Control Panel - Admin tools - Services
and looking at the list. Several may want access over the net -
Background intelligent transfer as used by Windows update for example,
or W32Time, synchronising the clock. You should let svchost (General
Host Process for Windows Services') have access through a firewall, but
there is no need as far as I can see for it to be a server to the net

Thanks Alex! Talk about XP overhead, these 5 SVCHOST takes up total of 26
Meg of memory.
