Hi, first timer here. My PC completely shut down, virus from p2p site. Only
way to get system running again without losing all the files, family pics,
music etc, was to reload XP over the existing XP, now my HD size has halved,
obviously two XP programs installed, taking up way too much room on a 40gb
HDD. Question is how to fix it so all is well, without having to do a full
uninstall and reformat. Any help will be appreciated, if it means a complete
reformat, will have to save all the files etc, bummer.

It's time to bite the bullet and start over. Buy a bigger HD, install XP fresh, install your
anti-virus software, then install the 40GB drive as a slave and let the AV clean it up. Then
use the old 40GB drive just for data storage.

It would take a just fraction of the time spent trying to get the old drive working right.

Hello WAz,
try to enter Windows in safe mode press F8 while windows boot,
then try to install or run some antivirus to discover name of virus.
Then go from another computer to google and try find on forums how to remove
this virus.
I hope this will help.

Not what I wanted to hear, but very true, get a bigger HD and leave this one as is. Thanks

Let's see...you do not use any type of anti-virus, probably don't have a
firewall installed, and you use P2P to steal things that don't belong to
you. You store your family pics on your hard drive without backing them
up....I'd say that pretty much boils down to *you should not be using a
computer*.
