You are required to have a Microsoft license for each computer
(One operating system (O/S) license per computer this been standard industry
practice
long before the personal computer and Microsoft existed).

You network computers are likely already running some earlier version of a
Microsoft
operating system (e.g. Windows 95, Windows 98). FIRST, you need to
determine if
these computer are suitable (e.g. memory, CPU) for Windows XP Pro.

If these computers are over 5 years old, you may be best served in
purchasing
new computers (that will have Windows XP Pro already installed).
I do not recommend "piecemeal" hardware upgrades for WinXP, unless it is
an easy memory upgrade
Standard depreciation for computer equipment is 3 to 5 years --
CHECK with your TAX SPECIALIST or ACCOUNTANT ... for 2004 small businesses
are eligible
for special tax and depreciations on capital equipment (including computer
equipment).

Depending upon the size of your installation (number of computers),
you may wish to contact Microsoft for a "site" or "corporate" license of
their products.

BTW, While Microsoft Operating Systems (Windows versions) are dominant (over
95%)
for the personal computer, alternatives exist - if you believe that
cost/pricing is a major
criteria for your upgrade.

Great info and advice!

You'll also want to consider total cost of ownership when
consider alternative products.

This is a good article, http://www.microsoft-
watch.com/article2/0,1995,1553620,00.asp.

You'll want to have a savy IT person if you decide to go
with non-MS though.
