XP Pro + XP Home Networking Problem

I have a problem getting my Desktop (XP Pro, SP2) and my Laptop (XP Home,
SP2) talking to each other. In the Desktop's "My Network Places" folder, the
Laptop DOES appear, but I can't access it... I get the error "\\Laptop is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource... network
path not found." On the Laptop's Network Places folder, the Desktop DOES
NOT appear at all.

SFS is enabled, Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled, the Guest account is active,
Windows firewall is set to allow sharing, I'm connecting thru a Belkin 4-port
Router/Hub, and use a Cable modem (both 'puters can see & use the modem!)
TrendMicro Internet Security is my virus checker, its firewall is turned
OFF, and I'm not blocking any IP addresses or URLs with it.

I have tried all the suggestions listed in various other messages on this

Jack,

My compliments on your advance diagnosis before posting. Very rare here. ;-)

Your Node Type on both computers is compatible. Hybrid and Unknown shouldn't be
a problem. Name resolution isn't the primary problem anyway.

IIWY, I'd start by looking at Laptop. Desktop can't even ping it by ip address.

Laptop CAN browse Desktop, so you don't have a protocol problem. My money is on
your firewall setup. You have Windows Firewall, and TrendMicro (which product -
PC-cillin or Home Network Security?). Many third party firewalls, like
TrendMicro, are known for causing problems even when disabled. You have to
enable and configure properly, or un install, carefully following procedures
provided by the vendor.

Since you're behind a router, and using Ethernet on both computers (no WLAN
here), you're probably safe with both firewalls disabled (WF) and un installed
(TM). Please re enable TM, then un install it. And disable WF. Then repeat
CDiag and browstat, there are clues in both tools.

Thnaks.. I read thru all the posts even vaguly related to my problems, and
decided to try all the stuff suggested before going further.

OK.. I turned OFF WF, and TrendMicro's Firewall was already off. I did NOT
uninstall TM at all. (I have Trend Mcro Internet Security 11.41 on both
'puters)
I re-booted, and lo & behold, the 2 'puters are now talking & sharing with
each other.

I turned WF back on, left TM's Firewall OFF, re-booted, and they are STILL
talking. Just to make sure, I re-booted a few more times, with NO changes to
the set-up. Still working just fine!

Whatever it was, it got fixed when I turned WF off. Altho, why it didn't
work the first time, I have no clue. The only change from when it didn't
work to when it did was turning WF off, then on & rebooting each time.

<sigh> And I thought XP was supposed to make this stuff easy! <grin>

help. But, it's working now, so all's well.

If you don't think that was easy, try setting up a LANMAN server in DOS...

"Easy" is a relative term based upon past experiences.

Jack,

Windows Firewall, by itself, is easy. I'd bet that un installing TM firewall
should make it possible for you to use WF, with the FPS exception enabled, and
share files between the 2 'puters. Does the Security Center show the TM
firewall?

If you're happy as you are right now, don't borrow trouble. With a sufficiently
hardened operating system and applications, you should be safe, behind your
Belkin router.
