I just discovered that if I copy a wma file to my writeable CD, XP will do
it. However, when I ask for standard audio format, it brings up Win Media
Player, and wants to connect to the internet. What's that all about? I can
write directly if I say I just want to create a computer playable CD.

Look at the Privacy options in WMP10.

If you just want to create a computer playable CD then you don't want a
standard audio CD do you? Or am I missing something?

Look at CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) it is free and burns
cds and DVDs (not dual layer ones yet).

To quote from their home page:-

Create Audio-CDs

* create Audio-CDs from mp3, wav, ogg and wma* files

I'll take a look, but I generally use Nero; however, a fellow told me about
the built in XP burner, so I thought I'd try it.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. When I want it to write such a
DVD format, I get the WMP program. I'm using WPM 8, I believe. What does WPM
have to do with writing a CD? I didn't create the wma file in WPM.
