XP Pro Won't Start

The XP Professional on one of my machines refuses to start. The Windows
splash screen comes up, but nothing else happens. Safe mode doesn't start
either. Tried Last Known Good Config -- no help. Then I tried the
Setup/Recovery option -- no change. So I tried replacing the registry with a
backup using the instruction in Microsoft Article ID 307545. The instructions
worked, but the most recent backup had the same startup problem. I was going
to go to an earlier backup, but when I tried ti get back into the Recovery
Console, it demanded an Admin. password -- which I've never had. Am I
completely screwed, or is there still a way?

Thanks,
D.

Did you try just entering Enter on the keyboard. If you never gave the XP
Administrator account a password, then there isn't one.
Just hit return.

Yeah, I did that. I've been starting the recovery console regularly without a
PW -- now it won't accept just RETURN!
