I recently upgraded my Acrobat viewer. Saturday I was on the net and
attemped to bring up a pdf document, nothing happened. Then when I went to
shut down, nothing happened (won't restart either).

I use IE 6.0.29, have Norton and MS Spyware software installed.. all up to
date and in use for an extended period. My XP is original (not upgraded),
Dell installed, and have all MS updates/fixes to software.

Please help me cure this problem.

Thanks Rock for the 9 pages of your experiance with this issue. Now if I can
only figure out what to do. My nephew is a MS developer. I am almost
tempted to visit him at work and see if he can fix it. It is pretty
overwhelming for a gal well into her 60's.

You're welcome Gayle. Yes it can be overwhelming. If you don't feel
comfortable with it by all means get someone to assist - not everyone is
a car mechanic either. You can work through the information a bit at a
time though.

One thing to try is a system restore to a date right before the problem
happened. Click on Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools |
System restore. With the tic mark in front of "Restore my computer to
an earlier time click Next. On the next screen click on restore point
for a date just prior to the problem, then click Next. Let it do it's
restore. See if that helps. If it doesn't you can always undo that
last restore.

Good luck.

The MS Gods heard my prayers. When I got up the day after Rock wrote there
was a message on my 'puter. It said that it had been restarted because MS
had sent me a security updates. 'gosh thought I, how could it re-start when
it wouldn't go down? Not one to tempt fate I did my thing for the day, then
tried re-start and it worked! Then, boldly, I asked it to shut down and it
did, and it started when I asked it!! Then I tried a pdf file, it opened!
And it printed!!!!

Now some might think that this old lady didn't really have a problem to
begin with... 'don't think so. My MS developer nephew got his start when he
was knee high and I did programming as a hobby on a Victor 9000 - when
writing in Basic was like writing a theorum. I am not easily stumped, but I
know that there are so many opportunities today for unanticipated conflicts
to arise.. even in the effort to repair or restore.. there are things to
leave to the young'ens.

So, if anyone else has a similar problem consider that the beta MS secruity
software may cause, then fix, the problem. Watch for that little blue shield.

I'm glad the problem was resolved for you Gayle. Thanks for posting back.
