HELP! Message says "Registry cannot load the hive" and then flashes
"physical memory dump complete" and asks me to choose safe mode or "last
good settings" or "normal" but none works. I don't have the recovery CD
(argh)....I've tried f* and reboot and various things but the OS won't
load....can a tech patch this up for me? are my files still on the
computer?

it also says something about contact system administrator for help, and
the word "corrupt" flashes by but it's too quick for me to read the error
message. and no, I didn't install any new hardware or drivers...ALL I DID
was move the laptop! From one room to another! Very bizarre; I didn't drop
it, I didn't dunk it in boiling canola oil, I simply moved it from living
room to another room and now it won't work (and yes I've tried it in four
rooms since: I'll try anything, even a witch doctor).

HELP!
and no, I am not typing this from that computer, which is a ThinkPad...

To fix this, you must have a bootable XP CD. Fortunately, it doesnt'
really matter which one, as long as it lets you run the Recovery Console.

You can also perform the steps if you remove the hard disk (disconnect the
power AND remove the battery first) and host it via USB connector on another
system.

Sounds like a corrupt registry. You'll need an XP CD to fix it.
