XP Pro won't complete upgrade process

Hello

I just bought a new PC that came with pre-installed XP home. I tried to upgrade to Pro and the process is interupted and restarts itself at step 4, like ten times in a row with no one even touching the PC. Installing Pro as a new installation wipes out all of the other pre-installed stuff. There is no audio device, and trying to run another program installation will sometimes completely lock up the PC to where even task manager is not available

Is there some trick to getting the upgrade to get through it's step 4?

Short of that, is there some instruction on which files to copy off the Pro CD to the HD, how to change the registry, etc. so that XP will run in Pro mode and I won't have to wipe all the OEM software

Hey guys, just trying to keep this near the top of the 'newest posts' list until I get an answer from someone other than myself.

Again, sorry about the whining, but this waiting for SOMEONE to answer is bogus, man. I'm sure that this thread has been reviewed by at least one expert. So even if that one expert were to say "never heard of this...can't help you." that would get me off onto another track (like getting a refund?).
