I tried to install a different floppy drive and when I booted it shorted at
the floopy power supply. Disconnected the floppy and booted the computer, it
gets to the windows xp screen and stop loading. Checked the power supply it
was ok. Thought it must have fried the motherboard so I replaced with new,
but still hangs at the same screen. I can go into the bios ,it recognizes the
hard drive but does not recognizes my second cd.I tried to reload xp from cd
but stops when it gets to starting windows. Any suggestions other than buying
new computer.

Thanks

If you have a DVD burner installed along with a cd - Try disconnecting the
dvd burner then install XP.

Hi

If I understood correctly, BIOS won't recognize your device (either CD drive
or floppy or both) based on what you said.

If that's the case, it's less likely a Windows problem but a hardware
problem although I don't know which problem could it be.

Check your MB vendor's site to see if there are Q&A for similar problems (if
you are sure that all your devices are working fine) and if there are new
BIOS updates, and do the same for CD.

Not sure but sounds like you are having device conflict, and if that's the
case, it's difficult for you to continue Windows installation or
configuration.

You have to make sure all devices to be recognized by the BIOS before going
into Windows problem, if any.

Hope this helps.

Take it to a professional and have them analyze the
problem - some problems can't be diagnosed or fixed in a
Newsgroup . . .

Good Luck !

By the way, I just noticed that you said you've changed a new MB.

Windows may require you to reinstall and reactivate if MB (and/or other
devices) has been changed.

My suggestions for your reference:

(1) If your old MB still works, I'd suggest you to put it back and restore
the last known working hardware configuration and reboot the Windows and see
if it works.

(2) If it works, back up everything before you try new hardware
configurations especially for new MB along with other devices, just in case
Windows requires you to reinstall and reactivate,

(3) If it does not work, try to use it as a secondary data HD in another
working system and see if that system can recognize and read the files in
Windows. If HD is fine, backup important data and settings as well before
you putting it back to the original system and working on the problem.

Good luck.

Too bad you didn't have a working floppy drive or I'd try running some HD
utilties off of the floppy to see if that fixes it. A week ago, a person
gave me a computer to work on that would hang on the XP startup. Couldn't
get it to load into safe mode. The windows setup would not detect the hard
drive either. I put in the Western Digital floppy disk and did a quick
search for problems. It said that it found an error and I should run the
full search for problems. I did and it claimed that it fixed the problem.
Sure enough, I restarted the computer and it loaded XP right up.

If you get to a Windows XP screen, then the problem is definitely in
Windows. It has allready read the CMOS in the BIOS, and has read a Boot
Sector on the hard drive.
Check your power connections to the Floppy or remove it completely and boot.
If you also changed the Motherboard, then you will have to do a Windows XP
reinstall. Boot to the CD, press enter at the 1st screen and follow the next
3 or 4 screens to the place where you are optioned to do a repair. Not the
option on the 1st screen. That one won't do it.

Unless your new motherboard is exactly the same as the original
one, you'll need to do at least a repair installation of Windows.
See "How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"

yes your correct, it was the slave cd, removed and all is well...
Thanks again
