Why can you not do a repair installation? What's stopping that? If you can
reformat and re-install you should be able to do a repair installation.

As another option, if need be, you can try to do your installation into
another directory, move your data over to the new one, and then delete the
old directory (I'd recommend a partition actually for that) and recover your
data that way.
