Epona,

Is this true of any/all files that I transfer from the
laptop running xp pro to the desk top running w98se. Would
this be true of a word document transferred from one
computer to the other if the laptop user was logged on as
an administrator in xp pro when the word doc was created.

Mike,

In future, please keep messages on the same topic in one thread, rather than
starting a new one - otherwise correspondence ends up very disjointed.

I'm not sure I really understand your problem entirely - I have a
five-system network here (2x XP Pro, 1 2000 Pro, 1 Linux (dual booted with
XP) and a laptop running 98) all networked via a router - I have no problems
opening anything created on any of the other machines (please note NT vs
9x). As 9x was not designed as an administrative OS, I'm mystified as to why
it's asking for administrative privileges. The security in built to 9x is
akin to a padlocked door in the middle of a field - it's pointless setting a
password because it can be bypassed by simply hitting cancel. It also isn't
an NTFS vs FAT32 issue as that affects the drive not the files. I frequently
transfer documents, images and music between all four OSes without issue.

In answer to your question - 98 doesn't care whether the document was
created under a limited or an administrative user account - please note that
it's the application that creates the document, not the operating system. I
will admit that you really have me stumped - maybe someone else has a better
idea. As I said, I have exactly the same scenario - i.e. desktop running XP
and a laptop running 98 and I've been transferring files between them ever
since XP was invented without issue, though usually it's the other way round
because my mother does her typing on the laptop and gives me the disk for
printing.

I'll let someone else have a go, but you may need to expound a lot more.

First Off sorry I didn't stick to my original thread it
was done accidently.

The files I transferred from my son's laptop, which has xp
pro, were transferred to a cd-rom. They are pictures from
his digital camera that he had downloaded to his laptop.
They are shown as exif jpeg (EXF) files.
When I put the cd-rom into my desktop which has win98se I
can open all the images and view them. If I try to alter
them in any way with my photo software, i.e. crop, lighten
etc. the response I get when I try to save the changes is:
"You do not have permission to open this file. See the
owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission"

Is there a way to recopy the jpg files off the laptop and
be able to alter them or make changes on the desktop. I
assume that my son is logged on as an administrator on his
laptop and that is why this is happening?

Epona My apologies for not sticking with the original
thread. I thought I had but screwed it up.

Let me be clearer on the problem. I copied exif jpeg (exf)
files that had been downloaded from my son's digital
camera onto his laptop (xp pro). I copied the files onto a
cd-rw disc using his laptop. When I run the cd on the
desktop (w98se) it does allow me to view all the pictures.
If I try to change the pictures in any way with my photo
software I get the following response when I attempt to
save the changes:
"You do not have permission to open this file. See the
owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission"

I can open the files I just can't save any changes I try
to make.

Thanks for giving me a few more details. EXF is a format peculiar to the
software that came with your son's Fuji. What happens if you save the photos
as regular, bog-standard JPEGs? Try a couple and post back. As to why it's
happening, I really don't know. You've just about reached the limit of my
expertise.

Epona,

I figured out what the problem was and it was a pretty
stupid mistake on my part.
I had the cd disc in my regular cd-rom drive. When I
placed the disc in my cd-rw drive I could then open and
amend all the jpeg files and save the results.
I should have realised that but I must have been having a
senior moment. Thanks for all your help.

You're welcome. Sometimes CD-ROMs don't like discs that have been burnt on
other systems - don't know why. Was the disc finalised?
