XP PRO UPDATE PROBLEM

Running XP Pro; 3 hard drives w/2 partitions each. Running Zone Alarm Pro & Norton Anti-Virus 2004. Reinstalled XP Pro after reformatting "C" partition NTFS. Attempted to run Update on SP1 after reinstall. Received error msg "Could not copy ks.sys. Attempted to resolve however, could not. Canceled to bypass. Got normal msg of System May not perform normally and continued. Received another error msg re" Could not install ntoskrnl.exe. Attempted to resolve by change path of update file. Also pointed to the original NTOSKRNL.EXE file. Still no luck. Bypassed and continued with update
Attempted to reboot with no success

Reformatted and reinstalled. Attempted to run Security Updates (excluding SP1). Received another msg regarding being unable to copy "ntoskrnl.exe'. Bypassed this file. I noticed that the update files are being copied to my "D" partion on another drive instead of a "TMP" folder on my "C" drive

Well now I cannot shut system down because it will not reboot; I cannot run Security Updates because it will ask me to shut down. I can reformat & reinstall. However, the above problems will probably reoccur. Plus I work out of my home so I have a lot of business e-mail replies which I cannot afford to lose

Any suggestions quick. I need to get my system back to a secure workable platform
