XP Pro Update Hangs

Update Scan id's 23 updates required. When I click
Install Now, system hangs.
Previous download aborted after partial download;
expected Update to resume, then install as usual.

What folder can I find the incomplete download? Maybe
deleting it would allow full download to start fresh.

Same problem after completely reinstalling XP (update).

Any ideas to execute a clean start for update
appreciated.

First close or exit out all other programs except vital

apps like the anti-virus and firewall, then get updates.
Or boot to safe mode with networking, connect and go to
windows updates and try it.
