I recently found out that the xp pro on my pc is not licenced and i have a licenced copy of xp home. Could someone tell me how I convert to the home edition? Can I just install over the pro?

Hi

You will need to re-format the hard disk/partition then install XP Home.
You can't install XP Home over the top of XP Pro.

Save any important files. You will have to do a clean install of XP.
Assuming your copy of "Home" is full retail, not an upgrade, see the
following link for instructions on a clean install. If it is an upgrade, you
will need a qualifying disk to upgrade, i.e., Windows 9x etc. Disconnect all
peripherals from your computer, except the mouse, keyboard and monitor
before installing.

Thanx Jax...how do I tell if it's a full install? It says version 2002...for distribution with a new pc only...it's obviously a legal copy...

Ok, since it's an OEM version, just follow the clean install instructions,
and my suggestions about saving files, etc. All you can do with the OEM
version is a clean install.

alrighty then...so be it and thanks again...still getting used to this site, but rest assured, I will be back. :)

You said it was marked, "For distribution with a new computer only". That
means it is an OEM version. That is, it was intended to be installed on a
new computer. Not to worry, it will format, partition and install the same
as the retail version does except, it cannot be used to up-grade an existing
installation of Windows and can't be legally transferred to another
computer. Any other difference is, really, of no consequence.

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
