XP PRO Start-Up Issue

I recently started getting a long error after the post test that states in
part, "we are sorry...windows was not shut down properly....this could be due
to a hardware/software change...choose to start in safe mode, last known good
configuration, normally...." It appears that all hardware is securely in
place (I have moved the computer around a lot lately.)

I have chosen these options: normally, and it goes into a loop where the
same error comes up. I have chosen last known configuration and after 3 or 4
times it will boot up. However, before it does, it does that loop and upon
final start-up I get a screen where I have the cursor, but nothing else -
then windows slowly appears.

I saw a couple other similar posts in the forums - but not the exact same.
I've noted the ideas but am asking for any advice anyone might have before
continuing (and nervously rebooting my computer). I already have the article
"Guided Help to clean boot or restore your computer from a clean boot state",
but thanks in advance to anyone who might have any other idea(s)!

Install xp cd,boot to cd,recovery, select 1 for C: Press enter key for
password,
type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru (15-20 min),type:EXIT Let xp start,remove
cd.

You may have a hard drive problem or a malware problem. Download the
diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer, run it and see what it
says. Have a look in computer management | event viewer and see if there are
any errors listed.

Run full antivirus and antispyware scans.

I'll add that to my list - what's the danger with recovery and losing data,
settings, etc?

Thanks Glen. I should've mentioned I did run adaware, spybot, hijack this,
MS Defender, ZA Spyware and Norton AV. I haven't done a chkdsk lately, but
I'll give that a go soon. I'll keep monitoring the posts for a day or two
for ideas before I take action. Then I'll post how it went.

Well, you might be able to share the .dmp file and have me take a look.
Oftentimes, the analysis tools we have can pinpoint the issue. Of
course I can't promise anything, but I'm happy to take a look if you'd
like.

the .dmp file would be in %SystemRoot%\Memory.dmp - or if you want, I
can guide you through figuring it out yourself.

Thanks,
James

Hi James -

Thanks. I located the file in the registry, but am not sure exactly how to
get to what it is you need. How do I get the information you're looking for?

I appreciate your time and help. Thanks.
