The following is from Microsoft Windows XP Professional
support and help center on my system:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version: 5.1.2600
Service Pack: 1.0

To my best knowledge all applicable security updates, and
hotfixes have been applied successfully.

I'm confused about the necessity of installing SP1a, or
not. Just exactly what is the recommendation??

Greetings

Windows XP Service Pack 1a is just Service Pack 1 without JavaVM. Due to
legal problems with Sun, Microsoft had to re-release SP1, which they called
SP1a. Service Pack 1 is just as much update to date as SP1a. Just make
sure you get all Windows Updates.

Chris,

Finally got to checking the newsgroup; thanks for
confirming the XP SP1 vs. SP1a question I posted.

I had concluded there was no need to install SP1a, but I
couldn't quite figure exactly WHY. That's probably WHY I
had such a difficult time in the military,, always asking
WHY!!

Have a Happy Holiday.

Hi

I didn't see your original posting, but if you already have SP1 installed, there is no need to install SP1a. However if neither are installed, I would suggest that you install SP1a as it includes a number of Security/Critical Updates.

The only difference between SP1 and SP1a is that SP1a does not have the
Microsoft Virtual Machine included. If you install SP1a, you will have to
install a version of a virtual machine, either Microsoft's, from a
third-party site, or Sun's Virtual Machine.
