Xp pro on 40 gig, cable modem, msn as home page.
Had problem over the last 6 months of retarts while online only. never when
offline. Decided to reload xp, did fresh install, bios reset themselves to
disable usb (don't know how that happened), enabled usb and loaded drivers
for cable modem and motherboard. Now xp restarts just before initial page
completes loading, EVERY TIME I ATTEMPT INTERNET ACCESS. Did the xp service
pack2 a few days earlier and the random restarts got worse.
Xp was originally loaded over a good clean loading of 98se. Loaded all
drivers and programs with Norton 2000 set at full protection prior to xp
install.
I'm using 2nd 40gig drive (98se) right now to access internet with the
same components as the xp drive. No starts on the 98se drive, just slower
than my kids cleaning their rooms.
ANY THOUGHTS?

First suspects these days are always viruses and spyware. Make
certain your antivirus software is fully up to date with the virus
definitions not more than a week old and do a complete virus scan of
your hard drive. Then get a "second opinion" by doing a free online
virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com Hopefully your XP hard
drive is not NTFS so it can be scanned when you boot Windows 98.

Also check for possible spyware and clean it up by following MVP Jim
Eshelman's Quick Fix procedure at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

And then go into Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the
Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the
Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "automatically
restart" to clear it. That should stop the reboots but they may be
replaced by a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error message and the
computer may then lock up requiring a manual power off and restart.
In that event the contents of the STOP message, including all of the
parameters, will be a direct clue as to the underlying cause. Post
that information back here if you need additional advice or
assistance.

Good luck
