I installed XP Pro on my new desktop machine not knowing
it could only be on one machine, I had already put it on
my laptop.

I need to uninstall XP Pro,it says I have 14 days left,
but still keep my XP Home os intact. This system is an HP
Pavilion and I have found they did/do not issue an XP
Home disk with the machine. I have no way of doing a
clean install of XP Home.

Question: How do I get XP Pro off and keep XP Home as it
was before the systems runs out of days and shuts down?

Help...

Upgrading to Windows XP Pro is a one-way ticket with
no uninstall option. In order to return to XP Home, you'll
need to reformat your drive and reinstall XP Home "clean".

The easier alternative is to simply purchase a Windows XP Pro
Product Key and activate your current installation.

check again on how hp handles reinstalls. many oem's now put the
installation stuff in a hidden partition that can be accessed with their
recovery tool that usually is started by some function key press early in
the boot.

or of course you could just go buy another license for xp pro.

Just get MS to activate your desktop install.

To add:

HP will send System Recovery CDs at no charge. They can afford to do that
because of all the $ they saved sending out systems with the System Recovery
on a hidden partition. The BIG problem with that practice is that it
doesn't always function. When your system won't boot at all, recovery from
a hidden partition is useless. Yes, HP will send the Recovery CDs if you
phone them. But, the Recovery CDs only put the system in the condition that
it was when it was shipped. You will lose all of your data, and any
programs that you installed since receiving the system.

Sorry, but you can *not* do this. There is no way to downgrade
from XP Professional to Home. You have to do a clean
reinstallation of XP Home.

Contact HP for help on how to reinstall XP Home cleanly.

By the way, XP's rule that you can only install it on a single
machine is nothing new. It's the same rule that's been in effect
on every version of Windows starting with Windows 3.1. The only
thing new with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

HP will have provided *some* means of putting the machine back to
ex-factory state. Usually with their machines hit F10 at power up. You
will need to take steps to back up data and bring settings forward if
you have spent time on setting up - read Gary Woodruff's article on
Files and settings Transfer at http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm
