XP Pro Reinstall

I have an unauthorized copy of XP Professional on a newly built PC, and would like to reinstall a legitimate copy...would a reinstall of XP Pro require me to reformat the partition? Or, can I just reinstall the licensed copy?
 
You'll need a "Full Version" of Windows XP Pro and
then proceed to perform a "repair install".

Just do a key change with the new license. No reinstall required for that.

David K. gave you some incorrect advice. Changing the Product Key
will not work in your case. You need to perform a "repair install" as
I outlined earlier.
