My first Sony Vio was stollen. Now I have a new one. I
upgraded the first sony to XP Pro and bought the new one
with XP pro already installed. Does anybody know how I
can tell which product code goes with which? I'm
upgrading another laptop and want to use the older sony's
OS but I understand that if I pick the wrong one, my new
laptop OS will shut down.

Your stolen Sony Vio also had the Windows XP license stolen,
therefore you cannot use the stolen license (Product Key) on a
different computer. You need to file an insurance claim for the
value of your stolen computer and the value of the Windows XP license.

Greetings --

Simply use the retail Upgrade CD that you purchased. It'll look
nothing at all like any OEM Recovery CD that might have come with the
new computer. The Product Key will be on the CD's packaging, while
the new computer's Product Key will be affixed to the bottom of the
new laptop. I don't see how anyone could possibly confuse them.

Carey, the OP says he/she had _upgraded_ the stolen machine to
WinXP, so he/she presumably has a retail license for WinXP Pro
Upgrade. Only the OEM OS originally installed on the stolen laptop is
permanently bound to the stolen machine.

Hi Bruce --

Correct me if I'm an error, but since the stolen laptop still had
his Windows XP Pro installed, is my assumption incorrect that
one cannot install the XP Pro on a different computer if XP Pro
was not removed from the stolen computer? There is really no
way of knowing if the "thief" is now using the stolen computer
with XP Pro installed.

Ah! I see your point now, but I don't think anyone, including
Microsoft, would expect the normal restrictions to apply, under the
circumstances. It's not the OP who has broken any laws and should be
penalized.

The installed WinXP may or may not be in use by the thief, or,
more likely, by whomever subsequently purchased the stolen property.
But, even if it were, I don't see how that would invalidate the OP's
license. After all, the OP still retains the original installation
CD, the Product Key, and the Certificate of Authenticity, all of which
comprise a legitimate license. At the most, the OP may have to
activate a new installation via telephone, explaining the situation.
I seriously doubt that, under the circumstances, Microsoft would favor
the thief over the legitimate license owner and deny activation.
