Has anyone heard or experienced a virus affecting Xp which causes a PC to
power down either after completing the boot process or shortly there after.
The problem also occurs if any application either O/S or third party is
initiated. Efforts to load antivirus fails due to the power down issue.
Booting from the PC manufacturer O/S CD does not eleviate the problem. Any
suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, many can cause problems which will shutdown, freeze or reboot a machine
due to changes which result in registry, software or device errors.

If no joy, check the memory modules for integrity. Run a test for at least 2
hours, overnight preferably:

By "booting from the PC manufacturer [sic] O/S CD," do you mean that
you've formatted the hard drive, restored the PC to it's original
ex-factory state? If so, and the problem persists, it's almost
certainly not caused by a virus, but rather by defective hardware --
either power supply or motherboard, most likely. Have you contacted the
PC manufacturer's Technical Support?

Bruce, I completely agree with your assessment and conclussionbased on how
you interpreted the information I provided. However, what I meant to
indicate was that I load the manufacturer's O/S CD powered up. When the PC
displayed the screen which gave me the options to either boot from CD or
Install software ( don't recall exactly what the 2nd option said" I choice
option one and the laptop completed booting up and it appeared that it was
accessing the CD drive throughout the process. Once complted bootup and
displaying my desktop, the problem of powering down continued. I did not
partion or reformed the harddrive. One attempt to two select option, i.e,
reload the O/S failed when the system powered down. Hope this explanation is
more clear. Thks

That does make the situation a bit more clear, yes. I still tend to
suspect a hardware problem, possibly heat related. Have you verified
that the laptop's cooling fan is spinning properly, and that all of the
airways are dust-free? Also, to bother further test your hardware and
possibly eliminate the OS as the problem, I'd suggest that you try
downloading a couple of free diagnostic tools, and run them from a
bootable CD. The free MemTest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) will
thoroughly check your RAM. You could also download a hard drive
diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. Another very
useful, and free, diagnostic tool would be the Ultimate Boot CD from
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/. These tools will allow you to stress
the laptop's hardware components without involving Windows or any
installed software, and should help you narrow down the source of your
problems.
