Hi,

I've got XP Pro running on a PIII-500 portable and it has an odd
behavior for some days now.

From time to time when I launch an application, it can be anything but
specially Explorer, all desktop icons disappear and then come back as
if I just started up the system.

Also the task bar icons (running tasks on the right) disappears and
reappear but not all of them.
It can happen that the icon of the task isn't present but the
application is running (example: Palm HotSync).

The system can be run as is and doesn't hang. To correct the thing, I
must either log off or reboot.

This thing get's really nasty when I run in save mode because any
application I start causes this kind of 'restart' so I can't do
anything.

Someone knows this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Ton

It sounds as if you're infected with a worm, trojan or
some type of virus on your system. I expect it's the
W32.Welchia.Worm. If you're not using a firewall-start
doing so-as well as actively extract this nuisance from
your machine. I'm doing so now - just having a few
problems with the last piece of the puzzle.

Thanks for your reaction

I've got Norton running and it is up to date, last scan, as I was
afraid for a virus, didn't show anything.

I'm behind a firewall, last test I ran I was undetectable (no port
open/visible.

Will do an on-line scan to be sure!

Thanks,

Not really a fix for your problem, but I've got an app or 2 that will
occasionally disappear from notification area. When this happens and I
need to do something with that icon, I've ended the process and then
restart it so it'll appear in notification area.
I don't know if you can similarly stop/restart HotSync.

Someone may come along with the solution any minute though.

A (partial) solution?

As I'm digging in to this problem, I found a post that talked about a
DirextX problem and this guy had launched Belarc Advisor to check the
installation of updates.

Did the same thing on my portable and fell of my chair when I saw the
result: since the installation of XP Pro (somewhere in 2001) I had
installed 29 patches/fixes and updates.... 15 of them reported errors
and needed to be reinstalled!! (and windows update says everything is
super!!!)

The 'crown' was for directX, I'm a bit an update freek so should have
been at 9.0b - my DXDIAG reported the 8.1 version!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've repaired it all and the computer, for the moment, seems more
stable.

My desktop, that has the same problem, showed no errors with Belarc
Advisor so I don't know what to do here.

I'll keep searching!

Bye,

Ton
