Hi, I have a strange issue that I cant seem to find a resolution to. I have
server and three clients (3 XP PRO/SP2 and 1 XP Media Ctr) using a DSL
router/wireless AP. The Server is wired to the router using DHCP and the
other three machines are wireless. I can share network drives using the ip
address of the machine, but not the machine name. Like \\192.168.0.1\my
doucments, but \\server\my documents fails each time stating that the
workgroup HOME is inaccessable. I have killed all firewalls etc and no
help.....

Any ideas???

Thanks
Chris

Chris,

This sounds like a name resolution issue. Is NetBT explicitly Enabled on all
computers? Check other services too.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. What firewalls did
you kill? Some third party firewalls don't allow that. There are several other
possibilities too. Read this article with an open mind.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Since accessing the machine by IP address works, this isn't a firewall
problem.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.
