For some time now I have been able to use the net send 192.168.1.xxx command
to send messages to other workstations in my network.

Over the last few months, this ability has been lost. There really have
been no changes on the network other then doing the windows updates. I can
ping the ip of the other workstations without issue and I have tried net
send with the internal firewall off and on.

I have also tried setting up a host file and entered in the ip and given the
pc a name. I have also tried to use the command using the computer name.

The error I get is

An error occurred while sending a message to 192.168.1.100

The message alias could not be found on the network.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273.

Any thoughts on how to get this to work again.

Thank you.

Sounds like the messenger service on your pc has been disabled.
Start / Run type services.msc this will bring up the 'services' window,
in right hand pane, scroll down to 'Messenger', double click on it and
check the 'Startup Type' box, change from Disabled to Automatic.

Thanks, that's exactly what it was.
