Anyone know what to do? When I just turn my Toshiba off and on again, 50% of
the time it demands that I go
through product activation. The first time I saw this I did bother to go
through the lengthy bore of product activation but then I realised that it
is an erroneous error message.

If I turn off and on again a few times it goes into windows normally.

Is this a legitimate question to ask or if I ask this, will everyone think I
am just using a hacked version of XP and refuse to assist?

If so, should I just get a hacked version which doesnt require activation
from Kazaa or somewhere and install it with all my
legitimate serial numbers and product key to stop this problem or is the
cure easier than that? (or is there something in the MS knowledge base on
it? As usual nothing is found using the search function on the MS site and
I cant reinstall windows as I was only given a rescue disc)

Did you install MS Office, too? If so, are you sure the activation
request is for Windows XP and not for MS Office?
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325081)

Are there any devices listed in Device Manager with yellowed exclamation
marks? I'm wondering if Windows XP thinks there was a major hardware
change on a [re]boot. (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325081)

Otherwise, you could call them up using the phone number shown during
activation.

Possible Resolution:

Boot into "Safe Mode" by pressing (F8) during a reboot.

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 regwizc.dll , and hit enter.
Then go again to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 licdll.dll , and hit enter again.

Apparently, those above files became unregistered as a result of some
type of registry cleaning, such as a poorly written spyware removal utility
or registry cleaner.

Q. "Should I just get a hacked version which doesn't require activation
from Kazaa or somewhere and install it with all my
legitimate serial numbers and product key....?"

A. It will not work and is a foolish thought.
