XP Pro install broke my PC

I have just installed a copy of XP pro on my main PC at home and it is now
broken and I can not get onto the internet.

I am not a novice but this has me stumped.

The install went all OK but the ethernet point on the motherboard stopped
working, no problem I though and installed a PCI card. This reports its self
to be working OK but refuses to connect to my broardband router. I have
manually put in all he details of my connection, I have run the wizards, I
have tried to set it all to auto select. Nothing works.

BTW when I ping 127.0.0.1 it responds so TCPIP is running.

The only other thing that seems to be wrong is in the device manager one of
the system resources is also failing : NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management,
there are no drivers loaded for this and if you look at the details it lists
about 4 items

I have considered formatting the hard drive (I have a backup of all my files
etc) and starting again but am unclear on how Microsoft would view this as I
have only just installed, activated and registered it, and like an idiot I
lost the bit of paper I wrote the activation code down on before I copied it
in to my little text file where I keep all this sort of stuff.

Any help would be great !

Bypass the router and see what happens. Obviously, make sure your firewall
is up and running first.

Go to Control Panel - System.. remove/uninstall the features that have
errors.. close out and reboot the machine.. Windows should re-install them
correctly, assuming that the motherboard is in good shape.. if you have a CD
which includes motherboard drivers, try that too..

Re-installing Windows at this point is just a little over the top..

Thanks for the help, but I can not bypass the router as it is a broadband
router that connects me to the internet. The router is working as I am using
its wireless part to send this from the laptop. If I log onto the router I do
not see the main PC in the arp table. I have checked cables etc.

You need to look at the networking aspect. Does the Router supply IP via DHCP or is it
static ?

What do you get for the interface when you execute in a Command Prompt; ipconfig /all ?

Can you ping the Router or access the Routers configuration via http or Telnet ?

Don't say that WinXP broke your PC. Tha'ts lame as your PC isn'y broken or you wouln't be
able to run Windows nor even ping the TCP/IP diagnostic repsonder !

I have tried static and DHCP addressing neither works, by that I mean when I
add the parameters statically ipconfig /all is all correct but I can not
establish a connection to the router. I can not ping anyhting except
127.0.0.1 to show that the IP stack is OK. The browser will not connect to
the router, I checked it from the laptop and the arp table does no show the
PC at all. the link light on the router port for the PC does come on when I
turn on the PC so it does detect something.

Unfortunatly the router does not (as far as I have ever tied) support a
telnet connection

Was another Windows version installed on the machine before this?

Where did you get this copy of XP pro?

Can you ping the Router ?

What is the address of the Router ?

Plaese provide the IPCONFIG /ALLL results.

Have you removed malware such as "News Dot Net" ?

Are you running WinXP SP2
If yes...

Open a Command Prompt and enter the following 2 command lines...
netsh winsock reset
netsh winsock reset catalog

If No...
Obtain and use LSP Fix

stupid question but are you sure the radio on teh wireless is turned on

What he is saying, is try connect the computer directly to the
modem, bypassing the router.
Normally there computer connects to a router, router
connects to a modem, and the modem connects to
the telephone jack or cable.

Try
ipconfig /renew
or
ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig /renew

And turn off computer, unplug the power from the router and modem
for 20 seconds. Then plug back and restart computer.
ethernet point on the motherboard stopped working

Win NT did this once, but motherboard ethernet may need
an update or not compatible with XP.

Where did you get this copy of XP pro?

There was a copy of XP on the machine before I installed this one. I am not
certain of its legitimacy though, as it was already installed on a PC I
bought second hand.

I have just bought a new PC which I want to use Linux on, so I don't need
the XP Pro that came with it. This is the one I am trying to install on my
"old" original pc.

Not using wireless on the pc, just the laptop, which is where I'm typing
these posts from.

Thanks for the reply your help solved it. I must have had a worse day at
work than I thought as it was a bit of a no brainer in the end. The faulty
system resources were the problem and once I had tracked down the motherboard
driver cd that I had kept "in a safe place" and reloaded all the motherborad
stuff that was not working the rest of it fell into place.

Thanks again
