XP PRO freeze on restart. black screen

couldnt find what i was looking for when searching. when selecting restart,
computer shuts down and all i get is a black screen instead of it booting up
to windows again. I have to do a hard restart.

I have already disabled the option to switch between users quickly in
control panel.
What do I do now ?
 
I'm seeing the same thing on XP Home

I have a user on my machine that whenever she tries to log off or restart the
whole system hangs (black screen, Caps lock light does not change when
tapping Caps Lock key, etc.). I have to cycle the power on the laptop to get
it to come back up. No other users have this issue. I can't figure out
which files are associated with the restart or log off process. I think that
there may be some corrupt files somewhere. Anyone with any idea your help
would be appreciated.
