I have set up the XP fax application, but when I try to
send a fax I keep getting the same error message: "No
dial tone. The phone is in use or not connected."

Computer connects to Linksys router (used as firewall -
not a shared connection) which connects to Cisco 678
modem which connects to internet via DSL. Internet
connection is through home phone line which is split to
phone and modem through a filter which allows both to be
used at the same time. I get error whether phone is in
use or not.

Anyone see a problem with this setup? Any suggestions /
solutions?

Yup, you are trying to fax through DSL which can't be done. You must use a
dial-up fax modem through your non-DSL telephone connection. Do you have a
fax modem installed?

According to what I can tell, the modem in the computer
is described as a PCI Soft 56 Data Fax Voice CARP (?)

How would you suggest I add fax capability to my existing
setup? Would I just run a phone cable from the back of
the computer to the phone line?

By the way, I have the Outlook Express that comes with
XP. The instructions for setting up faxing through Email
seem to apply only to Outlook XP. The instructions in
Fax Console Help don't match what I see in my Outlook
Tools menu, and I can't find a Fax Mail Transport to add
to my Email accounts.

That modem is what you need.

In my setup I have a tee-connector in the wall jack. This lets me split the
line for fax and DSL. The DSL side of the connection has a filter supplied
by the phone company.

The other side of the tee runs directly into the PCI modem. If you have a
phone in that spot, run another phone line from the modem to the phone. The
modem's ports are marked "wall" and "phone" usually. The cables are just
common telephone cables with the small snap-in connectors. Once you connect
your fax modem you should be in business.

Outlook Express definitely can't send or receive conventional faxes. I don't
know about Outlook.
