Hi all,

I'm running XP pro with SP1 and all the latest updates on
a 1ghz laptop. When it has been running for extended
periods I get the following problem ~ when I click on the
quick launch for IE or Outlook express it starts to
access the h/d, but nothing ever loads. If I select to
log off again it starts to access but doesnt do anything.
pressing ctrl, alt and del does nothing, it won't bring
up the task manager. the only option I have it to power
down and reboot.
for additional info these are programs that run when this
happens and I normaly run constantly. AIM, MSN 6.1 msgr,
Norton AntiVirus and zone alarm pro firewall.
Any help you could shed on this would be a greatly
appreciated, cos when I do the reboot sometimes I lose my
IE favorties icons and need to rebookmark them all again.

thnx

Ice

Bad & incorrect advice.

All it needs is for one critical file that System Restore relies on to be
corrupt or deleted and SR won't work.

Try right-clicking on the taskbar - that normally also brings up the Task
Manager link.
If you can open it that way instead of ctrl/alt/del, it may give some
insight as to what's running or isn't.

Right clicking on the task bar and selecting task manager
wont open it up either. again it accesses the hd but
nothing comes up.

I have system restore turned off.

Not so good then. You may have to try a repair install. Only problem there
is you lose SP1 & all updates - if it works.
Worth a call to MS at this stage before you do anything.
