Hi, I just upgraded to XP professional from Win 98 (actually I did a clean
install on a brand new hard drive) and am having a couple of problems.
When I used the network wizard tool to create my dialup internet connection
it went smoothly but XP will not put a shortcut to the connection on my
desktop as requested and I cannot find the connection anywhere to make my
own shortcut.

My network places, view network connections, right click connection, create
shortcut.
Also the password which I entered for this connection for some
reason keps getting altered so there are to many characters.

XP just displays it like that, so that someone looking over your shoulder
can't see how many actual characters the password has, to make it harder to
crack/figure out.
Also in Win 98 when on the net there was an icon like 2 little monitors
against the clock in the bottom right hand corner and when right clicked I
could disconnect, however they aren't there on xp.

My network places, view network connection, right click connection,
properties, check the box to show the icon.
Another problem I have encountered is that when I click on search in the
main start menu nothing happens.

I don't know this one, sorry
Oh and one more thing but this might be a hardware issue, is that my monitor
will not use the 85hz refresh mode like it used to under win98, even though
I am using latest xp drivers for both the monitor and the graphics card.
If the new xp drivers don't support 85hz refresh then there's nothing you
can do about it.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, I tried this but the folder is empty. The only trace
I can find of my connection is by looking at the connections tab in internet
explorer.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,

That's also OK. You also can do the steps there.

For the Network Connection blank issue, you can try the following
suggestion.

Stopping the Network Connections service from Computer Management ->
Services
and Applications -> Services
and disabling it. Re-enable the service and start the service. You may
have to
re-boot between disbale and re-enable.
