XP Pro crashed and the following message displays:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\system32\config\system

I am not able to do a repair, 'r' (for repair) it is not an option.
I am not able to do a recovery- when I get to the prompt I have tried to do
the following:

Use the instructions in the website
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for attempts at
repair/recovery. I tried to create a temp folder and copy files, I have tried
to access the bootcfg, I tried to do a chkdsk at which I am stopped becuase
"the volume contains one or more unrecoverabel problems."

I am at a stand still and would like to know if there are anymore tips or
tricks I might be able to use.

Thanks for reading this and any help you have to offer.

This is a critical Windows registry file. See How to recover from a
corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

This procedure cannot be used with OEM Windows versions, which often rules
it, requiring a reinstall if you have no backup. Be sure to run a chkdsk /r
as this is sometimes the result of a hard disk problem.

I am unable to copy files, they do not exist. The information in the link
does not work.

I have begun the chkdsk /r, it is still running- if the sector is not usable
are there additional steps that can be explored?

Thank you for your insights.

You have nothing in the c:\windows\repair directory? If you don't have
a backup of the registry you can copy from, then this is one of the
few times that would call for a reinstall

If the registry backup is inaccessible, unless you're lucky and the chkdsk
/r resolves it, reinstallation will be the only option. You could try a
repair installation first (if you have a true XP CD as contrasted to some
OEM recovery media). See How to perform an in-place upgrade
(reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341

Note though, if bad sectors are reported and repaired, you should monitor
the drive closely. If any additional bad sectors develop it should be
replaced.

Thank you for all your help! Unfortunately, reinstallation is scheduled.

I have taken the hard drive out and am extracting the documents and emails.
I will reinstall XP after everything is saved elsewhere.

All the best!

Install drive in another computer as a slave, if you can access the drive
copy your files you need or burn to a disk if possible. Go to the manufacture
of the drives web site and download tools utilities for checking the drive.
No point installing OS if the drive is on its way out.
