I installed XP Pro on my machine last November and have been running
relatively hassle free ever since. However, this past Saturday, I was
lazing around the house and decided to burn some music CD's and
sometime (no more than a few minutes) after I finihsed, the system
locked up hard. I rebooted, and when XP tried to load up, it stopped
with a "Corrupt or Missing File" message complaining about
\windows\system32\system and suggested running a repair. So, I booted
my system from the XP install CD, but when I tried to run the repair,
I instantly got a Blue Screen message complaining about a Page Fault
in a Non Paged Area, and that I should remove any new hardware. I got
this message while either trying to repair, or re-install windows. I
disabled everything non-essential (LAN, Sound, Cache, Video Shadow
RAM, etc.) in my BIOS (failsafe option), as well as disconnected my
CDRW drive, but I still get the same message.

My system has a dual-boot option with Win98, which loads fine, but XP
won't budge.

I confused, I have not added any new hardware, drivers, etc. to my
system. What can I try to get around this error and get XP up and
running again?

Thanks.

System:

XP Pro w/latest SP
Shuttle AN38 mainboard (onboard sound & LAN)
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
SimpleTech 512 MB 333 DDR memory
LeadTek GeForce 2 MX 64 MB AGP Video
WD 80 GB HD
Mitsumi 32x CD

It's possible your DDR memory may have developed a fault. Windows XP is more
susceptible to faulty memory than Win98. Suggest running Memtest on it, at
least to eliminate the possibility of a memory error.

I downloaded a program called memtest86 to a boot disk and then booted my
machine with it. I let the program run for about an hour and a half in
which it conducted a series of tests seven times. All with no errors
detected, so I don't think there is a memory error.

Could there be a disk problem that is causing the error? WinXP is loaded on
my e: drive(partition) which is NTFS (win98 is on my c: drive). Could e:
have become corrupted some how that it is unusable in its current state? If
so, are there any utilities (floppy bootable) to correct problems on NTFS?

Thanks.
