I cannot join my active directory domain from my XP
professional laptop. All of the settings are correct.
I've checked the knowledge base and disabled media
sensing because of the gigabit card, enabled netbios,
edited the LMHost file, etc... I can reach it via IP and
can map a drive through another user name. but I get the
error that the domain cannot be found or cantacted when I
try to join. If I choose details - it tells me that it
successfully queried DNS for the SRV etc.. I am at a
TOTAL loss. DNS records seem to be fine and all other
machines (MS 2000) can connect just fine. This is the
second XP Pro laptop that I am having a problem with.
Deadline, Help!!

I am having the same issue. All the MSFT posts say "Must
be a DNS issue", but DNS is set up exactly as specified
and attempts to join domain still fail. (YES, I am using
XP Pro....)

I get same problem. My client settings are

Firewall dow
using XP Pr
can ping serve
ran netsh diag gui and everything passe
I can access web
can access computer on network via \\<comp name

When i try to join domain I get

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain <domain name>

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Shanno

p.s There is one point where i change computer name and join domain in one go and it says welcome to domain BUT registers new computer name on server but old computer name stays on machine. Because of this conflict you can't change to new name unless you go back to workgroup.

You DNS settings on the clients must be pointed to the DNS server hosting
your AD namespace, not your ISP.
