XP Pro browser problem

I installed XP Pro SP2 and try to use it with a BT Broadband DSL Modem.
Every time I logon the connection to the internet is established and I can
surf for a minute or two. Then no signal gets through to the browser any more
(neither IE nor Mozilla). Strange thing is that my modem says it is still
online and when I ping websites I get a quick response.
If I connect with my laptop on the same modem everything is perfect, so it's
not a problem with the modem, the ISP or the line.
I also checked that the settings for "Idle time before hanging up" is set to
"never" in the browser settings.

Anybody any ideas?
Help is very much appreciated!

Do you have a firewall installed, it may cause problems. Do you have any
USB power-saving features enabled? Have a look in Device Manager on the USB
device and disable any power-saving features. I am, of course, assuming
your modem is connected via USB.
