I need to reload my boot drive in order to expand the partition. Prior to
the XP Pro 'upgrade' I would have run NT backup, saved the registry files,
done a minimalist install after reformatting the drive, then restoring the
tape and registry files. But under XP this seems to be impossible.
When I elect to backup the boot drive (with or without saving the system
state) NTBackup insists on using Volume Shadow Copy (Select box is greyed
out, cannot be deselected). Backup starts, then fails immediately. The error
message in Errlog is 'Shadow Copy Writer ConfigDirectory called routine
RegQueryValueExW which failed with status 0x80070002 (converted to
0x800423f4). This makes me think that the XP install didnt setup some config
info, but since the whole VSS setup is essentially undocumented on XP, its
all pretty much black magic. And of course, the 'SUpport Centre' search
pulls up nothing.
It would, of course, be great to fix the problem, but from the other
unanswered posts I have seen about this problem, it doesnt seem to be one
that is on the 'investigate/fix' list.
So, any advice about 3rd party tools to enable me to backup my boot drive so
I can rebuild it on a larger disk?
